This is probably as much a consequence of the arduous outdoor construction work on roads and
cantonments undertaken by the Corps, as the result of illness (especially typhoid and malaria) or
accident. Much of the work was perforce done in the open and during the height of summer with the
attendant risk of sunstroke.
The cost borne by the Royal Engineers is well illustrated by the number of burials in Troodos in their
first summer there. Five of the first eight burials in this cemetery, all between 27 May and 7 October
1879, are of men from the 31st Fortress Company RE, and another two are of infants born to the wives
of soldiers in the Corps.
