The Solitary Second World War Grave





Corporal William Leonard Mackman was a Motor Transport fitter with 17 Workshop Unit, Royal Air 

Force and sustained serious injuries in a motor accident on 26 September 1942 at Erimi, Cyprus while 
on duty. He died two days later at 82 General Hospital, Platres,24 and was accorded a service funeral at 

Troodos, this being the nearest burial ground to his place of death.25 He was the only serviceman to be 
buried at Troodos during the Second World War, as well as the only member of the RAF in this cemetery.

24 The Forest Park Hotel in Platres, constructed in 1936 and still in use in 2013, was commandeered by the British Forces in 
the Second World War and used as a general hospital. Corporal Mackman would have been admitted to this hospital.
