shown were awarded to
Private Frank Bowyer,
who is remembered on
the Islip War Memorial. He was the first man from the village to be killed in the Great War, dying on 20th November 1914 during the 1st Battle of Ypres in Belgium. He enlisted
in the Royal Fusiliers in 1901 and served for 11 years before moving to Islip and lodging with Mrs. Stafford. Having no contact with any of his family, she became his next-of-kin and was sent his medals, back pay and War Gratuity totalling £9 1s. His rather poor- quality picture is shown and was found in the Kettering Leader newspaper dated 1st January 1915. He should have received the 1914 Star medal as well as the two shown but records show that this was erroneously not awarded. The original box the medals was issued in is also shown. These were donated by Rita Edmonds.

As we enter what is traditionally the coldest time of a new year, this could be a good time to look out those old photographs and, if you know who the people are, write their names on the back. Old photos are fascinating to look at, even more so if you know who is on them. Today, pictures tend to be taken on phones, often never looked at again and certainly not captioned. Just a thought!
