the trolley wheels started to fall off. We laughed so much attempting to control the trolley with the rather large autoclave while panicking about our new equipment and trying to hold onto it for dear life in case it fell. As we bumbled along as best we could with wheels falling off, we bumped into the QM of 47 Regt who was aghast at us and immediately called for help. Within no time we had a gleaming, professional looking sturdy trolley that did the job perfectly.
Two weeks later, we had the news that the building was to be ready a week ahead of schedule and we could move in! We were given a week to close and move. Myself, and a lot of other staff members, had felt a lot of love for the old building, it had served Larkhill very well over the years but bit by bit things were starting to fall apart so we knew it was time to move on to bigger and better things. We started packing up the three surgeries, waiting room, offices, lab, changing rooms, reception, storeroom, coffee room, and DERK trolley.
On Monday February 10th 2020, we moved in, very excited to be in our sparkling, very modern, beautiful, clean new build.
It was very hard work getting the centre ready. We all had fitbits on and were each doing between 19,000 -20,000 steps a
day. We were surrounded by cardboard
and polystyrene, it seemed never ending. However, it was very enjoyable as everything was so new and seemed so incredibly spacious and luxurious compared to our little old building. We also had a lot of help from the QM dept of 47 Regt who helped
us to “hump and dump” and dispose of thousands of boxes and polystyrene.
During this, we were also sorting out lots of instruments that had been shipped over from closed dental centres in Germany.
We made up all the cons trays, endo trays, hygiene trays, radiography trays, XLA trays, and surgical trays ready for the CSSD room. From now on all instruments and trays were to be kept in the CSSD room and not in the surgery. It took a bit of getting used to for “old school” types such as myself, however, it worked well and was a good progression.
On Feb 17th (yes just a week after
we moved) we opened the doors to the patients. Patients seemed to be equally as impressed with the building as us and
