along with sweet corn, runner and climbing
French beans, pumpkins, squash and marrows.
When planting them out, plant so
they are at the same depth as in the pot,
firm well with your hands and water
in well. If it stays dry, they will need
watering until they are established.
Mulch if you have any spare organic
matter as this helps to retain moisture
and reduce weed growth as well as
helping to feed the plants.
If you want a bit of colour in the
garden there are now a wide range of
bedding plants to choose from, many that will
flower from late June to October as well as being
suitable for growing in containers. For edging
plants lobelia, alyssum, bidens and begonia
are reliable. The main carpet area can be filled
with petunia, pelargoniums, impatiens, salvia’s,
heliotrope French and African marigolds. If you
want some taller plants to dot in the area, dahlia

‘Bishop of Llandaff ’, canna’s, fuchsia,
kochia, cosmos will give height to the
display.
Before planting fork over the area,
remove any weeds, break up any lumps
to produce a fine soil (tilth), plant using
a trowel of spade if large plants, firm in well
and water. If growing in containers, they will
need regular watering and feeding as will any
vegetables on containers.
