 Boxing
It has been strong year for the 5 RIFLES boxing team. October 2018 saw a successful Inter- Company Boxing Competition; 50 Riflemen with two months of preparations culminating in a riveting and hard-fought ten bouts on the night. This was also broadcast live through The Rifles Facebook page; allowing us to share and excellent night with the whole regimental family. Congratu- lations to FSp Company for their well-deserved victory.
This laid the foundations for 5 RIFLES to enter a team in the Army Inter Unit boxing compe- tition. Although our developing team lost 7-2 in the quarter-finals to an experienced 1 RRF team, it was the first step towards broader success in the ring in coming years for 5 RIFLES. Particular mention must go to LCpl Grant and Rfn Scott for winning their bouts and to Rfn Saedi for winning the ‘Most Courageous Boxer’ award. An exciting foundation for success in coming years.
All the hard work paid off for Rfn Norbury with a solid victory
 Cricket
At the time of writing, 5 RIFLES has just beaten 4 Armoured Med Regiment to go through to the Army Major Units semi-final. The battalion has a strong side, with emerging talents such as WO2 Calvert alongside accomplished transferees like LCpl De Freitas coming in from 2 RIFLES to bowl the quick stuff. Special mention should be made to Capt H Wootton for his hugely unimaginative and glacial batting at the top of the order, Sjt Springer for his tricky swing bowling and impressive run-scoring and the Commanding Officer for his stylish bolstering of the middle order. The return of Capt B Bishop as OC Jav has added pace to the bowling attack; it is only disappointing that the Bn 2iC can’t
keep Capt N Flye busy enough as Ops Officer to spare us his efforts as a ‘specialist fielder’. Luckily Sjt Pidsley and LCpl Smith are ever-present with their catching skills which are self-declared to be ‘as safe as houses’. With a fair amount of rank in the team, it has luckily been possible to insist that Lt Dan Hunt never repeats his feeble two overs of ‘off-spin’ that were despatched for 46 runs, including 4 consecutive maximums.
As the Rifles Cricket Bn, it is only fitting that 5 RIFLES have retained the Kenya Challenge Cup in the Inter-Bn Cricket Competition and continue their hot streak in the Major Units competition. The future of 5 RIFLES cricket is bright.
