During the final week of the tour, the band held their annual solo competition for the `Roger Swift Trophy`. The solos were anonymously performed and unaccompanied for the Director of Music and Bandmaster to critique. The most accomplished performer will then represent the band in the Corps of Army Music`s 25th year celebration solo compe- tition, to be held later on in the year.
The following Wednesday was the Commandant’s parade, which is a formal and final rehearsal to allow all of the Cadets to perfect their drill and bearing for the final parade on the Friday. As was expected, the rehearsal went outstandingly, with only a few areas for improvement.
Forming up on the square outside New College, the entire college will march through the Academy onto the square of Old College where their friends and family will be waiting. The inspecting officer for
U.S. Army, was welcomed onto the square with an adaptation of ‘Fame and Glory’ by Albert Matt, perfectly timed to match his walk down the Kings Walk onto the rostrum. The parade was, as always, a meticulous and fine display of military precision, and the cadets` turnout and bearing was exemplary throughout, as was commented on by General Milley.
The Band felt very privileged to perform for the parade, and although there were late nights and early starts throughout our tour, the final parade always makes the hard work worth it.
