The Rifles Northern Dinner - College of St Hild & St Bede – 8 September 18
The Dinner was held once again in the Joachim Room, the former chapel of St Hild’s College, assisted by the Band & Bugles of the Durham Army Cadet Force under their Director of Music Major Colin Miller and Bugle Major Derek Corbett. The dinner was honoured by the presence of the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham Mrs Sue Snowdon and the Mayor of Durham Cllr John Lethbridge. General Sir Peter de la Billiere and Lady de la Billiere were present as was Brigadier Bob Macgregor-Oakford, Brigadier Charlie Collins (Rifles Colonel North and Midlands) and Lorraine, Colonel Ted and Pippa Shields, Colonel James and Carolyn Ramsbotham, Colonel Tony and Judith George and Colonel Arthur Charlton. The event was hosted by Major Chris Lawton Rifles Secretary Durham and attended by many former Durham Light Infantry, Light Infantry & Durham ACF officers and their wives, as well as some officers of the recently formed 8th Bn The Rifles.

     Armistice – Open Treasure’s newest exhibition at Durham Cathedral
The Lord Lieutenant of County Durham Mrs Sue Snowdon chatted to Lt Col John Heron and Major Chris Lawton MBE DL at the reception in the Chapter House of the Cathedral before the opening of the Armistice - Open Treasure Exhibition in the Cathedral on 24 September. After an introduction and welcome by the Dean, Major Lawton spoke to the invited guests about the sequence of events which led to the signing of the Armistice which came into effect at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 ending the most horrendous war ever fought until that time. The invited guests then visited the DLI Chapel to look at the new frontal and dossal designed and made by the Chaplain to the DLI Association Revd Kenneth Crawford before climbing up to the former monks’ dormitory to look at the latest “Open Treasure Exhibition.”

The DLI Association Celebration Lunch Caedmon Hall – Hild-Bede 9 September 2018
After the service over 300 members of the Association made their way either by coaches provided by the Association or under their own steam to the College of St Hild and St Bede for the
celebratory lunch.
All received a commemorative badge as a memento of the
day. Major Wharton, Chairman spoke to all those at the Lunch and thanked them for their support to the Reunion.
The Lord Lieutenant Mrs Sue Snowdon also spoke and said how much she enjoyed being with the DLI. She could have
been with the RAF but she preferred to be with the DLI on this special occasion. After lunch everyone moved to Caedmon Hall where the celebration concert by the Durham ACF Band and Bugles took place. Having taken advantage of a well-stocked bar the afternoon ended with a rendition of “We
are some of the DLI” at around 4.00pm.
