DLI Association Indoor Games 2019
The 2019 DLI Association Indoor Games took three individuals, would play separately, each with a
place on Sunday 17 March 2019 at the Dubmire Royal British Legion Club in Fence Houses. It was organised by the Houghton-Le-Spring Branch under their Secretary, Richy Tough, and a strong team of members who conducted the games and made arrangements for a beef curry or a ham salad for members at lunch time, though many made their own arrangements and brought a wide variety of packed meals. The usual three knockout compe- titions took place, darts, dominoes and whist. Branches entered teams and arrived promptly so that a good start could be made at 1133 hrs.
Lunch break on Indoor Games Day ran from just before 1200 midday until 1300 which gave everybody a chance to chat to friends. It also was good to see more ladies present at the games, as they had recently been given the right of full membership to the Association. Paulene Gill Secretary of Consett & Stanley Branch leads the darts team from there. Ray Garbutt Captain of the Stockton Team scoring for Stockton.
In year 2019 a new format was tried for the WHIST competition, which had in recent years been difficult to complete. To make it easier, a team of 3 individuals was entered rather than 3 pairs. These
hand of a quarter the pack, in other words 13 cards. They would still play three rounds against the same opponents as formerly. This proved more popular as the team of 3 was more balanced than it had been with 6 players, and most branches were able to field a team of three players enabling everyone to enjoy the day. Here are the results for the WHIST compe- tition, which was won by Consett & Stanley against a tough match with Houghton-le-Spring in the final. The dominoes competition was won by Stockton after a close match against Consett & Stanley in the final. The darts competition reached its conclusion during the afternoon. This was a tightly fought match in which Gateshead & Newcastle played Durham in the final.
This was the last occasion on which Major Wharton would be the Chairman of the Association. On Sunday he handed-over Chairmanship of the Association to Major Lawton, who unfortunately was not present, being away on holiday. However, Major Wharton said how much he had enjoyed being Chairman of the Association taking part in the special and interesting events he had led since he took over as Chairman. He wished the Association every success in the future. The Wooden Spoon for the Team gaining the fewest number of points was up for competition. The result of this was also shared between two branches, but we’re not saying who they were!
The “Wooden Spoon” for the least points scored was fought over by 3 teams who will not be named
The overall winning trophy is shared between Consett & Stanley branch and Stockton branch
