 4 RIFLES Sports 2018/19
Gone are the days in 4 RIFLES that we can form a boxing squad, call on the battalion football or rugby teams and send a cricket team on tour. In our new Specialised Infantry role, the way we carry out our sporting activities has changed to more individual activities such as; Cross Country with a 4-man team consisting of Capt Sean Lennon, WO2 Steve Cox, SSgt Wainwright (REME) and Sgt Morgan (RAMC) winning the Regional Command South Cross Country championships in Oct and SSgt Wainwright (REME) winning overall (Army) masters champion. Continuing our ‘running’ theme, RMO Maj Sarah Sierens, RAO Capt Eves and the Padre Maj Neil Mclay entered the fleet half marathon earlier this year in their RIFLES attire and WO2 Cox completed the 75 Mile charity run to Pegasus Bridge for the Veterans Charity, raising in excess of £600. The CO and WO2 (CSM) Jonny Williams have represented the Army at the Tri Service Paragliding champion- ships held in Wales, with CSjt Williams coming a respectful fourth place. Cricket has seen a team captained by Cpl May enter the Inter RIFLES T10 at Winchester in Jun coming third overall. Rugby has seen WO2 Andre Zwijnen and Sjt Burr repre- senting the RIFLES combined team at the RIFLES gathering. Hockey has seen Capt George Gillard and Cpl Williams both represent the Infantry in the Infantry championships held in Gibraltar, winning all 3 matches.
Capt Jess Sismey-Durrant (RAMC) and seven of the Bn shooting team entered the Nordic Ski Championships in Jan 2019; the team gave a good account of themselves, despite the majority being novice skiers. Jess placed 22nd out of 100 women at the competition and gained a Bronze in the 10km classic race.
Lastly the battalion has been well represented at fishing – far too often viewed as a recreational pastime for old men – by WO2 Tim Tyler, Capt Arthur Daley (selected for Inter Corps Champion- ships in Sep), Capt Leon Upton, Sjt Goodhall and Sjt Barnett.
