PEACE PARK IMPROVEMENTS
History
The Peace Park, previously ‘Kiln Close’, was bought by the Parish Council in 1920 to commemorate the Great War of 1914 – 1918. It was dedicated to the town as a permanent war memorial to the fallen.
Centenary Improvements
To mark the 2020 centenary year the Town Council consulted with the public and transformed the lower area of the park. The Peace Park is now accessible to all, thanks
to the new winding pathway known as Centenary Walk. The paths will be finished with a golden gravel dressing. The poppy shaped meeting area pays tribute to the memorial status of the park. A wheel-to rose garden and sensory garden offer inclusive areas for reflection and relaxation. These improvements were kindly supported
by a grant from the FCC Communities Foundation.
A surprise discovery
An old well was discovered during excavation works. The well likely dates back to the early 1800s and has been made into
a new feature. We will install information boards once the history of the well has been established.
Delays
Unfortunately, the project was significantly delayed. COVID-19 hampered progress and excessive rainfall caused difficult working conditions. The nationwide shortage of building materials caused further issues. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.
We hope that you enjoy the new facilities.
