Beating the
‘Winter Blues’
What do we mean when we talk about the ‘Winter Blues’? It is true to say that some of us are pre-disposed to S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder). This can manifest itself in our mental and physical state.
For all of us there are some key factors
that can help to alleviate how we feel about ourselves. We will need to be exposed to more natural light, regular exercise and maintain a balanced healthy diet. This needs to be or to become a habit, a permanent lifestyle change.
What we can’t control is the weather and seasons. If we know it’s coming then prepare, give time and attention to lifestyle shifts that will enhance our general well-being. We wouldn’t go on holiday without planning and
preparing, so why would we go into the autumn and winter seasons without adjusting our lifestyle to accommodate the changes? There
is no such thing as bad weather, but there is inappropriate clothing!
Concentrate on what we can control, how I/ we respond to the cycle of seasonal changes. This requires us to call upon our rational faculties, that internal still voice telling us to respond appropriately, bringing balance into our lives.
Our bodies are highly complex living organisms, to some degree we have limited but crucial capacity to affect the outcomes.
When we are in the ‘Now’ we are in the present moment. In that quiet stillness we need to listen, observe and respond to our mental and bodily needs.
“The quieter you become,
The more you can hear.” – Baba Ram Dass.
