DAVID RICHARDSON
1927 – 2020
I had the privilege of knowing David for a number of years and always found him interesting to speak
with and engaging company.
He was born in Finedon,
his parents moving shortly
after to Little Addington.
One of his jobs on Sunday
morning as a youth was
to light the Bake House
oven so it was hot enough
for the baker to cook the
villagers Sunday roasts.
They moved to Raunds
when David was in his teens
where his father became the
Co-op dairy farm manager. After
serving with the R.A.F. during World
War 2, working on electrics and radar, he worked for the Co-op delivering groceries to local villages. He learned projection and showed films at the Tivoli in Raunds and the Plaza in Thrapston.
With his two brothers he was instrumental in forming the Nene Valley Wheelers cycling club, mentioned in my article in July 2017.
He and Eileen Peacock were married
in Thrapston in 1949 and by 1952 he worked as a travelling salesman for Dupont Brothers, who had premises at what is now Thrapston Farm and Garden; he later
became manager of the Thrapston shop until 1974 when he moved
to work at East Northants Council. He retired in1992,
a time which coincided with his taking on the role
of carer for his wife for the next thirteen years, a task he did happily, with much support from their daughter Hilary.
He was part of the Thrapston and Raunds St
John Ambulance, taking cadets to camps and often drove the ambulance to events.
He was also a member of the Thrapston branch of the British
Legion where he was President until health problems meant he was unable to attend meetings.
The final few years were difficult for David, with mobility difficulties worsening but, with regular visits from carers and Hilary living with him, he managed to remain in his own home. He was always pleased to receive a visit, when he often regaled me with tales from his life spent in East Northants.
My thoughts are with his daughter Hilary and other family members both in Britain and further afield.
