True my body is broken, but that ultimately hasn’t stopped me from exploring the farthest reaches of possibility and of what can be achieved in the more modern and enlightened world. In the past fifteen or so years I’ve scuba dived in the Caribbean twice thanks to a former Corps member Kevin James, flown in helicopters, sailed on the Solent, flown in a Boeing 747 flight simulator, been driven around part of the Welsh rally section by a professional at 100mph plus, mostly sideways! Flown a glider, done off road 4x4 driving, driven around Silverstone race track and have indoor sky dived to name but a few! I teach in local universities, have written a published book and look to tomorrow and the many more tomorrows with an utterly positive mindset.
My point is, that retirement, being forced to retire early, and in my case very early, hasn’t for me, a guy of mid sixties age and paralysed from the neck down, meant that life after M.B.S. is beyond me, and I believe that should be true for most of us.
M.B.S. is survival, is life!

MR UNIVERSE BODYBUILDING COMPETITION 2019
Sgt (SI) B Beattie RAPTC
Ihave now been weight training for about 18 years and took up competitive bodybuilding in 2013. I have now competed in 24 competitions including 4 British
championships, 2 World Championships and 3 Mr Universe.
This year I began my preparation for the Mr Universe Bodybuilding Championship in August; this gave me around 14 weeks to get myself prepared to afford me the best placing possible. The competition was held in Acapulco, Mexico and is one of the largest and most prestigious competitions in the world. My preparation consisted of 90-120 minutes steady state cardio a day, 7 days a week in addition to 5 intense weight training sessions. This was all done whilst in a calorie deficit and working full time.
After arriving in Mexico, myself and the rest of the UK Team made our way to the hotel and started to make our final preparations before the competition which mainly consisted of resting and ensuring we had access to the correct food etc as restaurants were off limits at this time. On the day of the competition there were over 200 athletes from 20 countries competing in the various categories. I placed 3rd in the Athletic Bodybuilding category, which is a lightweight bodybuilding class. This was a huge achievement and has fuelled the fire to further progress and win the Mr Universe competition the next time I compete.
