Whilst I work from home during the virus lockdown with no sign yet of when life will return to normal and social distancing is the way of life I am sure we have all had time to reflect on normality and the social contact we all took for granted. I have always appreciated the value of the RAPTC Association network and how enhancing and uplifting contact with our Association family members can be, weather it is just meeting up for a coffee, playing golf or at formal / informal dinners. The importance of maintaining contact and recording our experiences has always been important but in these unprecedented times the need to maintain these links and memories has never been more important.
Photos, Images and names can activate long term memories often bringing back related events which have been forgotten in the mists of time. This was brought home to me when the museum curator asked me to put names to faces in unmarked photographs held in the museum. Those photos brought back memories of events, old friends and comrades who I have not seen or heard from for many years. Don’t take my word for it just pick up an MBS from the days when you joined the Corps and I am sure the photos and images will spark your recollections and even remind you of related events long forgotten.
The MBS is a means of connecting with our past and past editions of the MBS given to some of our older Association members, some of whom are struggling with dementia have helped to bring back memories for them and provided a little respite. The MBS has been going for 100 years and the Corps celebrates its 160th anniversary in 2020. The MBS is more than just a collection of
words and photos, it is a our history and captures your time in the Corps and beyond.
It is worth remembering that today’s events are tomorrow’s history so it is vital we maintain our annual Journal. In years to come when you have left the Corps gone onto other things and eventually into retirement, the MBS maybe the trigger which activates your memory cells to draw out those names and events from the mists of time long after the event.
I fully appreciate the time and effort of recording and
submitting articles and photos for the MBS which can be times consuming so I thank all those who have taken the time to record their experiences which will provide tomorrows memories. For those who have submitted articles but not made the final editorial cut please accept my annual apology and be reassured your articles and photos are not left discarded and will be kept in the archives for future reference.
There is mention of Covid-19 in this edition of the MBS but it will be referred to in more depth in the next edition.
