Having been at the Army Headquarters (AHQ) gym for almost seven months I’m extremely impressed with how hard working and motivated the gym staff are. There has
been a huge amount of progress and success for the gym and the physical performance of the wider unit. The gymnasium at AHQ is not a purpose-built facility it is an old vehicle inspection bay. This means the number of users (Approx. 3000) far outstrips the gym capacity. This is further complicated by the unit being split over two sites, Blenheim (Army HQ) Ramillies (Field Army HQ). Therefore, there has been a new outdoor functional training facility built on the Blenheim side of the site, that is now heavily used, freeing up capacity in the main gym at peak times.
To better cater the physical training programme for the whole force and ranging ability of those in Army HQ, the programmed timetable for circuits has been revised and expanded. The spinning studio has been moved and updated to increase its size and capacity to further benefit the ‘Keep Army HQ moving’ initiative. A part time Yoga instructor has been employed teaching one-hour sessions three times a week, this has proven very popular with class sizes averaging 30 to 40. Outside the gym our cross-county team has gone from strength to strength wining numerous events and silverware culminating with the female team winning the Army inter unit cross country championships.
The gym and its staff have also supported various AHQ trials and research such as Optimising Physical Performance team who own the research into GCC and Non GCC PES, PERFORM, and further Army health and performance research.

Looking forward into the next year, the focus will be on expanding the main gym and updating its equipment, the possibility of a trim trail is also being scoped. We hope to build on our cross-country success and increase wider sporting achievements.
