MAYFLOWER 400 AND RSYC – SUMMER 2020
Mayflower 400 was launched at a reception at the then American Ambassador’s Residence in 2015 to commemorate the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620.
With the Speedwell, the ship was boarded in Southampton in August, in hopes of settling up a colony in America for Pilgrims, merchants and seamen. Beset with problems from the outset, they called into Dartmouth and Plymouth for repairs to the ships and eventually The Mayflower set sail alone in September, arriving off course and in fierce wintery weather in what became Plymouth, Massachusetts.
From the outset, the Royal Southampton Yacht Club saw this as an opportunity to celebrate the rich Maritime History of the city which could be shown by a Grand Parade of Sail, joining the clubs, industries, businesses, and interests of the area. Even Cunard promised an Ancestry Cruise departing Southampton on 14 August full of Americans honouring this significant moment in their history. The sail past would be followed by a rally of yachts to join the cities of Southampton, Dartmouth and Plymouth in their M400 programme.
That was then. This is now. America, Southampton, Dartmouth and even Plymouth had to abandon their many events set for this summer. We were particularly disappointed in having to cancel the Parade of Sail which had the interest of yacht clubs, Little Ships from Dunkirk, the Shieldhall, Old Gaffers (Classic yachts), ABP, MDL, SCC, Blue Funnel, in a spectacular tribute to the history and industry of our city. We had even hoped to use the event to draw attention to Marine Conservation.
Due to the difficulties with crowds of people and the threats from COVID-19 on-going, the decision to cancel had to follow. We would like to thank all those who helped fill the promises of 2020 for this event and who share in honouring our Maritime Heritage.
