Built up Areas (TIBUA) on the following Friday. Wednesday was our water sports day and visit to
the Royal Navy (RN) Gibraltar Boat Squadron at Gun Wharf; unfortunately, due to the strong winds the water sports had to be curtailed. The cadets and staff had a chance to see the weapons and equipment used by the RN to secure the territorial waters around the Rock and to visit one of the squadron’s patrol boats, HMS Sabre. Cadets and staff were also taken for rides around the Bay of Gibraltar in very fast RIBs of the Gibraltar Adventurous Training and Water Sports Centre.
Thursday was a day of hard work for cadets with an introduction to tunnel operations; the tunnels within the Rock have been used in recent years to train troops and special forces how to operate and fight in tunnel systems. The cadets were introduced to this aspect of military operations in the morning, followed in the afternoon by an exercise where the cadets had to clear a tunnel of enemy, which was loud, confusing, hot and sweaty and showed how hard this type of operations are.

On Friday we used Buffadero Training Area to introduce the cadets to TIBUA which took them through Patrolling in an urban environment, House and Building entry drills and Room clearance drills. This was followed on Saturday with an exercise, where the cadets in their platoons had to clear a sequence of defended houses and structures, again a very loud, confusing, hot and sweaty experience that they all seemed to enjoy.
In addition, the cadets had the chance to visit several cultural sites, The Kings Chapel, the garrison church for British Forces Gibraltar, where they paraded in the centre of Gibraltar Town to the amazement of tourists just off a docked cruise ship, the Arabic castle, the WW2 tunnels and St Michael’s Cave. They also had the chance to relax on the beach, a five minute walk from camp, and enjoy a Bar-B-Que and meal out at the marina.
