Growing with Children
Grow an Allotment Rainbow
How about spending the winter months planning a rainbow bed with your children? Using the Kings Seeds members catalogue you can let them research the different colours of both vegetables and flowers for your living and growing rainbow.
Red: red lettuce; rainbow chard; beets; red carrot varieties; radishes; tomatoes; red peppers; cosmos and poppies.
Orange: carrots; orange tomatoes; orange peppers; butternut squash; pumpkins; marigolds and Californian poppies.
Yellow: yellow peppers; yellow tomatoes; summer squash; sweetcorn; yellow carrots; marigolds, poached egg plants and cosmos.
Green: lettuce; spinach; kale; collards; chard; peas; beans; broccoli; cabbage; Brussels sprouts; Chinese cabbage; bok choy; Asian greens; cucumber; courgette; parsley; basil, dill, and many other herbs; nicotiana and bells of Ireland.
Blue/Indigo/Violet: aubergine; purple cabbage; purple carrots; purple cauliflower; purple potatoes; radicchio; red onions; purple basil; purple peppers; sweet peas, borage and cerinthe.
White: cauliflower; onions; scallions; parsnips; cosmos and daisies.
Mark out the beds in spring with painted boards or pebbles and make some coloured plant labels to carry on the rainbow theme.
