sown Spring onions and radish. I continue to sow radish throughout September as these germinate and crop quickly, keeping the ground full and productive. Tomatoes grown inside the polytunnel and outdoors on the plot have both cropped very well, as have the cucumbers and the Sweet and Chilli peppers in the polytunnel.
Dwarf French Beans have cropped much better this year than the runners and a late sowing of Climbing French Bean Cobra at the end of June started cropping late august very low down on the plants and looks like it will continue through to the autumn hopefully.
Courgettes and marrows suffered during the hottest spell,
but recovered well in August producing an abundance of fruits. Sweetcorn has been superb and loved the weather, and growing an early variety like Earlibird and Goldcrest a later variety has certainly extended the season this year.
The rest of September is going to be busy harvesting and clearing old crops ready for autumn and winter preparation. As the nights draw in this will allow us all time to digest the New 2019 NSALG seed catalogue filled with a mixture of old favourites and new varieties to select from and decide what to grow next year. Don’t forget if any NSALG member has a seed problem and needs some advice, the team at Kings Seeds are always at the end of a phone to help.
Happy Gardening!
