Mulch Much?
From decoration to protection, mulch is a versatile technique that provides many bene ts to plants.
In nature, areas such as forests produce their own mulch at Autumn, when the trees shed their leaves, creating a soft biodegradable layer. This layer protects plants from extreme weather conditions, and improves the level of nutrients in the soil as the layer degrades.
How should we use mulch?
By mulching, similar protective and nutritional effects can be reproduced
in gardens. Mulch can be used to
protect newly-planted trees, shrubs and perennials, conserve water in the soil, and decorate plant pots.
Mulch should always be applied in a level layer of at least 5cm (2inch), ideally at the end of the Autumn season before the Winter frosts, while the soil is still soft and moist. Alternatively mulch can be spread in late Winter or early Spring in preparation for the Summer heat.
What needs to be kept in
mind when using mulch?
If the mulch is laid correctly, there are usually few problems with it, however, if mulch is replaced before the old layer has rotted away, this can cause a hard layer to build up, making it almost impossible for water to get through to the plant roots. To avoid this, only replace mulch when it is rotted. Furthermore, if mulch is in direct contact with the stems of young shrubs or trees, this can weaken the plants in ghting off diseases.
What’s the best thing about mulch?
It’s so versatile it can be made from just about anything.
Strulch -
Science in Action
Dr Geoff Whiteley, my husband, developed Strulch at Leeds University and we turned it into our business.
We have gained new customers each year, people with every type and size of garden imaginable. Much it has been word of mouth because Strulch does what it promises and people like to share good practice.
Autumn is a good time to spread a mulch when the ground has been cleared and before the winter sets in. Customers
tell us that Strulch helps protect less hardy plants and some vegetables will over winter with a good mulch and some eece to protect against frosts.
