Capel St Mary Allotments, 40th Summer Show 2017
Everyone who lives in Suffolk and is interested in allotments will have heard of the Capel St Mary Allotment Association’s late Summer Show. It has been an event for the last 40 years and
its reputation has been enhanced by good exposure in the local press, a good website and through a rather charming DVD in which the preparation and outcome of the show are presented in an entertaining way.
2017 was to be my rst visit to this show and my trip would take me from the most northerly part of Suffolk (Lowestoft) to Capel which is in the most southerly part of the county, a distance of some 60 miles. Capel lies just off the A12 twixt Ipswich and Colchester and has expanded over the years as a commuter village for Ipswich
and on down to London. The allotment site lies on the perimeter
Southern
of the village and is all contained
in one eld. It is a model for what
an allotment site should present, containing well marked out plots, large polytunnels (space can be rented by plotholders), club house and a very well equipped sales shed. Mowers are available for keeping the site in pristine condition. The Association also has a large membership of gardeners who are not plotholders.
Back to the show; it is Saturday
the 2nd September and it can be
found in the Village Hall. Car parking
is available and on entering the hall
one is met with a display relating to
the NAS complete with lea ets and
information. On entering the main
hall, you are struck by the air of
serenity; the display tables are laden
with wonderful fruits, vegetables and owers. As with other shows I have attended one starts to see one or two names that tend to appear again and again but I say well done to all exhibitors for the overall effect and standard are outstanding. As with other shows there is a section of the hall displaying crafts and photography. Having enjoyed the whole variety of the show one can now ascend to the stage at the end of the hall for tea and delicious homemade cakes.
All that is left is to drive home and re ect on the wonders created by the talented gardeners.
