A brighter future for all after the pandemic?
Way back, for Christmas I received a present that meant once a month, for six months I got a lovely flat box of flowers delivered to our door. The flat box was long and thin and would go though the letterbox. ‘How on earth?’ I hear you ask.
I will explain. The flowers are harvested
at their peak (usually roses, carnations, snap dragons, alstroemeria (look it up!)) Then the
rose heads are covered with tiny netting bags to protect them, and the rest simply laid with them on brown paper and left to cool and dry before they are joined with several choice bits of long lasting greenery, put into a long thin box, and put in the post. At least I think that’s how it happens.
When they arrive, I open them carefully and read the note that quaintly tells me ‘Ssh your flowers are sleeping’ and I find inside, an apparently dead bed of flat flowers in hairnets and limp greenery. However, I follow the instructions about how to wake them up
by removing the nets, cutting the stems and putting them in a bucket of water, and lo, the next morning, as promised, they have revived and there is a wonderful bunch of flowers all ready to put into a vase.
Thinking about this, while I waited, got me pondering about this pandemic. It seems as though we have all been cut off in our prime, dried out, restricted and left for dead (or as in the flowers – put to sleep). Separated from everyone we sometimes feel only half alive
- don’t we? But eventually we come through
(a letterbox?) and get delivered to someone who cares deeply about us and wants to put things right. It gets much better from here on, I promise. The box gets opened, the rules are followed and eventually we revive and become the people we once were... we might even be better than that after a year of ‘sleeping and separation’. Just a thought!
