Beach. The path climbed up out of the town passing Pendennis Castle, built in the 1540s to defend the English coast against foreign invasion. The Castle was open but due to the pandemic you could only visit by booking ahead. The path then gently undulated
along the coast and there were several sandy beaches where you could stop for refreshments and even a swim if you were brave enough!
The next day saw us heading out again on foot to MylorYacht Haven. The walk was rather longer than anticipated as I didn’t really take in the fact that we had to walk all the way up one branch of the estuary and then back along the other side. However, it was a lovely day and we were rewarded with
stunning views over the estuary.
As the weather was set to turn towards
the end of the week, and there was talk again of another possible Lockdown being enforced, we left Falmouth with heavy hearts onTuesday morning. In order to get back to the Solent before the
weather turned,we needed to sail overnight. We were hoping for
wind from the South-West as
forecast, but it didn’t materialise
until the following morning.
Our trip back was mainly
spent keeping out of the way
of Navy vessels.There was a
war ship undertaking firing
practice that we had to keep
our distance from, and then for most of the night we had HMS Severn hot on our heels. However, we managed to keep out of her way.
On arrival back in the Solent we skipped picking up a mooring buoy inYarmouth and headed straight to our berth in Ocean Village.Although we were tired after our overnight trip, we had really enjoyed the late Summer sunshine over the last two weeks, and the freedom we have when sailing.
It had been a welcome break from being bombarded with a constant flow of news about the global pandemic.
