 Exercise TYTEROGAKA SWELL
OCdt Renwick
In accordance with the RMAS Regular Com- missioning Course, a group of Officer Cadets from CC182 conducted a Sub-Aqua Div-
ing expedition to Lanzarote during the period of 15th-23rd December 2018. The expedition comprised of nine Officer Cadets and one quali- fied instructor (ESADS); the expedition was led by OCdt Renwick and 2IC OCdt Jessop.
The expedition departed RMAS to Luton Air- port on the 15th December. After a short drive in the hire cars, the expedition arrived at their self-catered accommodation approximately 2km from the Military Approved Centre (MAC) – Safari Diving in Puerto del Carmen, which would be their base for the following week.
In order to allow for best tuition, the expedition was split in half depending upon experience (those who have dived previously and those that hadn’t). Those without prior qualifications con- ducted BSAC Ocean Diver training under the MAC, while the rest conducted BSAC Sports
Diver (SD) and Dive Leader (DL) training depend- ing on their level of experience.
OCdt Renwick and Mr James Bromige acted as the SADS (Sub-Aqua Diving Supervisors) throughout the week and took responsibility for the training of the SD and DL courses. There were many highlights throughout the week, with divers seeing numerous large Angel Sharks, octopus and several species of ray. A night dive allowed OCdts to hone their skills and experi- ence the bioluminescence and marine life pre- sent in low light conditions.
The final days of diving, 20th and 21st Dec, combined both groups and allowed OCdts to consolidate their training, and allowed the Ocean Divers to experience wreck diving for the first time. The expedition flew back to Luton Air- port on 22nd December, managing to avoid any of the major delays caused by the drone incident at Gatwick.
The expedition was a great success and was enjoyed by all. The training concluded with four obtaining their BSAC Ocean Diver qualification,
two achieving their BSAC Sports Diver, and two completing the theory and practical elements of their BSAC Dive Leader. Four also received the additional Collective First Aid Training (CFAT) in order to assist the SADS throughout the week.
