Allotments
Sally Williams, ITV London’s weather reporter, visited Isle Of Dogs
Allotments during
National Allotments
Week. She spoke to NAS representative Terry Dickinson and deputy representative Paula Owen
about waiting lists, kimchi and the benefits of allotments!
2023 marked the 21st year of National Allotments Week, set up by the National Allotment Society to raise awareness and promote the benefits of allotments.
Hundreds of allotments up and down the country threw open their gates to show off their plots and crops, posted on social media – and some even engaged with local TV and print media. Well done to all those who used poster templates and press packs to promote their allotments and open days locally.
Here is a roundup of just some of 2023’s National Allotments Week happenings:
 Firs Estate Allotments Open Day
Firs Estate Allotments in Derby held an open day – throwing open their gates to the local community, offering plant sales, scarecrow competitions, live music and a fantastic BBQ. It was their first open day since the pandemic
and their new committee were extremely pleased with how it went.
BBC East Midlands even paid them a visit, highlighting the benefits of allotmenting and the importance of preserving green spaces. They also held a fantastic raffle,
in which one of their plotholders won a helicopter ride!
