Sports and Adventurous Training
Surfing
As the 2017 surf season ends the 2018 season begins with a very different venue and conditions from water at 20 degrees down to 9 degrees and a boy that is a shock to the system the only good thing is you don’t have to worry about sharks anymore, after the great result in Australia the army surf team all go back two different parts of the country but they all seem to get back into the water as soon as they can and start training for the Army and tri service championships held again in Newquay. Conditions this year were very different to last year – the sun was not out this year, the waves were very big and conditions were quite challenging. The compe- tition had to be held in two different locations due to the size of the swell. Luckily we had the shelter of Town Beach and Tolcarne in Newquay where we held the heats and female final but by mid-week we were able to move back to Penhale to complete the finals of the bodyboard, short board and
the longboard open. Unfortunately the RAF got a better result this year and won by
a small margin but we were still able to defeat the Navy again but only just. All three services are now off practising for another competition in late September
for the opportunity to be picked to surf against the Australian Defence Force that are coming over in early October. This will be more of a shock to the Australians as a lot of them have not experienced the cold water of the UK and the Australian winter wetsuit is like our summer wetsuit so they better get some thicker Wetsuits and gloves and boots to match. Accommodation booked at RAF St Mawgan and waves on order we wait for the ozzy’s

Sailing
6 RIFLES has been active on the water this year. The headline event was the Regimental Regatta, hosted by Seaview Yacht Club on the Isle of Wight. The team, consisting of CSjt Windy Miller, Capt Kris Tarry and 2Lt Toby Fielding, secured a respectable 7 of 13 overall. Narrowly missing out on a race win; coming 2nd and 3rd in two races. In a year of light airs racing, the team’s canny upwind sailing was more than once scuppered by rip tides around the mark. The event was enjoyed by all, and a great way to get to know the regiment. C Company delivered a water sports day during a weekend excursion to the Channel Islands. Riflemen tried their hand at dinghy sailing after a bracing swim test in a saltwater lagoon. Most had never sailed before so there were unplanned capsize drills a plenty. Fortu- nately the sunshine dried everyone out
for a BBQ on the beach.
6 RIFLES also provides one of the
bowmen to the Army Offshore Racing Team in the form of 2Lt Fielding. The team is on course to win the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s IRC 2 division after an
outstanding season.
All of these events are open to all ranks
and sailing abilities, members of the Battalion are encouraged to get involved
in 2019.
