Training Wing
The Battalion has had a busy training year, but one which has usefully progressed throughout the year, built around the Light Role Battlecraft Syllabus- developing the Bn’s skill set but outside its comfort zone. This centred on a ‘spine’ of large central training events which served the functions of focusing and driving development, challenging the Battalion and providing training Measurements of Performance (MoPs) towards Ex ASKARI STORM 1/18 and the
assumption of the VJTF (L) commitment.
A Battalion Skill at Arms Meet at Bulford Ranges in September showed off the traditional sharpshooting bent of the Rifles, testing marksmanship at various ranges, positions, and scenarios at day and night. The return of a demanding Ex CHOSEN MAN 18 in October challenged the Riflemen in their core skills- AFV recognition, skill at arms, artillery indication and operational fitness amongst others. Rfn Mankee emerged victorious despite fierce competition as the
2017 Chosen Man.
Finally, on return from Kenya, the Battalion’s Rifle
Platoons competed for the top spot in H Jones 18, focusing on the VJTF (L) commitment. This built on the standards achieved in Kenya, with the challenges being more VJTF(L) specific and complex- and with the real risk of failure! The areas covered included anti-armour ambushes, NLAW DCCT shoots, an insertion march, urban black light raids, unarmed combat, urban defence (with TES!), live CQM and a competition shoot. Five Platoon emerged victorious- but the development was seen across the board. Capt J Foster
