“FIREMAN SAM” VISITS MIRFIELD AIR CADETS
One Tuesday evening in August, a visitor
to 868 (Mirfield) Squadron enabled cadets enjoyed a unique experience. The Squadron welcomed a guest for the evening, a genuine Fireman Sam (in reality Sam Wilkinson from Rapid Fire Extinguishers Ltd.)
Sam and his
colleague explained
the “triangle of fire” and
how extinguishers use the principle of removing one side of the triangle to put out fires. They then demonstrated and taught the cadets how to properly handle and use various types of fire extinguisher, and even set up controlled fires for them to get practice at using the extinguishers to put them out, and gaining valuable skills and experience that might prove essential to the preservation of life and property in the future.
Cadet Aiden Lee said this about the experience:
“On a Tuesday evening, me and my fellow cadets had the opportunity to experience a lesson on the usage of fire extinguishers, delivered by a fireman who went by the name Sam, and his and his colleague at Rapid Fire Extinguishers Ltd. I personally had a very fun night, while also being provided information on the different fire extinguisher types, and enjoying the moments when I could use them on a live fire. My favourite fire

extinguisher type would be the CO2 variant, because it was firstly, very loud, second, the CO2
stops the influence of oxygen, which fires very importantly need. Overall, I think it was
a great experience and the things I learnt could be potentially life-saving.”

 SPEN VALLEY
PASSING OUT
PARADE
By Flight Lieutenant Kellyann Martin
Cadets at 2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron had massive support from their parents recently as they turned out to watch the Passing Out Parade.
After months of hard work, the new recruits under- went their enrolment ceremony, cadets were awarded badges, and several new promotions were made.
The Squadron Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Kellyann Martin set a new record of promoting FIVE new Corporals - a record amount of promotions at one time never reached before.
But after much leadership training, demonstrations of their skills in organising and running activities for other cadets, a letter applying for promotion and gruelling NCO interviews for the role, all five cadets thoroughly deserved their promotion to Corporal, the first step on the rank structure leadership ladder.
Their next challenge is to fight it out, to see who makes it to the rank of Sergeant first!

 Armed Forces Day Parade
Armed Forces Day
was honoured with a parade in Cleckheaton, and Air Cadets of
2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron were proud to take part.
Along with other uniformed services and dignitaries, a parade was held in Cleckheaton Memorial Park.
