illuminated and embellished scroll bearing the resolution, its date and appropriate signatures can then be arranged. Sometimes, but not always, a formal parade by the unit through the locality, exercising their newly bestowed Freedom will take place immediately before or after the presentation by the Mayor.
To avoid any confusion, when a local authority merges, any existing civic honours would need to be re-conferred by its successor. For example the RAMC, RADC and QARANC all received the Freedom of the Borough of Aldershot in 1973, but this lapsed with the formation of the Borough of Rushmoor in 1974. Similarly where a unit, or part thereof,
retains its titular number, extant civic honours are carried forward in the new guise, Two examples being 225 (Highland) Field Ambulance (1998) viz 225 (Scottish) Medical Regiment (2015) and 251 (Sunderland) Field Ambulance (1985) viz 251 Medical Squadron (Sunderland), 3 Medical Regiment (2015).
If anyone can add any detail, particularly of lapsed honours where a unit or local authority has been disbanded or merged, and German Fahnenbands whichhave been awarded. I would be interested to hear from them.
