‘It’s not all about the Trauma!’
Capt Carter C. Intensive Care Nurse. 16 Medical Regiment
The majority of admissions to military critical care units will be due to battlefield trauma, however a small proportion will be due to non-traumatic injuries, termed disease and non-battle injuries (DNBI). These patients potentially provide challenges for the deployed nursing teams due to the variety and types of DNBI conditions exposed to deploying personnel. There is very little published on this patient group within the professional arena, therefore this presentation will explore military critical care case mix and discuss the needs of the non-trauma patient in the military critical care unit.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this session, participants should be able to:
• Explain the term ‘Disease and Non Battle Injury’
• Explore the impact of DNBI patients within the deployed
critical care unit by using examples and case studies
• Explain military critical care practices

  Conclusion
Overall the event was well evaluated, and the RCN DNF and CCIF steering committees would like to thank everyone’s contribution to this event. Plans have already begun for the next DNF Conference, which will be held on 26-27 Feb 14 at RCN HQ. The theme of this conference will be ‘Contingency Operations – Are we ready?’ and will focus on all specialities within Defence. A call for poster abstracts has begun and details of this conference and the DNF can be found at www.rcn.org.uk

DANS symposium 2013 “Return to contingency: the leadership challenge”. The key theme is the importance in developing professional practice within this area. As an organisation dedicated to professional development the British Association of Critical Care Nurses (BACCN) Award winning Military Region had a membership stand outlining how we support Military Critical Care Nurses and Health Care Support Workers (HCSW). This includes a specific Military Region Trauma Critical Care Workshop, bi-annual newsletter, online resources and a dedicated HCSW representative. As members additional benefits include discounted study events, conferences and a journal.
To demonstrate the ambience of intensive care nurses in the Contingency Environment a Role 2 Light Manoeuvre (R2LM) intensive care bay was set up. A challenge was set to guess the cardiac rhythm of our critical care patient. The winners were Capt Harry Wallace, Cpl Amy Jones and Cpl Fay Curtis who all guessed sinus bradycardia and received goodie bags as prizes.
As one of the largest most well established critical care nursing organisation in the United Kingdom
the BACCN’s mission is “to provide opportunities to members which support professional development and promote the art and science of critical care. Also its aim is to influence the future development of critical care nursing.” With this in mind the Military Region developed a Trauma study event aimed specifically for new nurses to the critical care environment and those who have not deployed. So far three of these study events have been delivered and were well attended with positive feedback.
The BACCN Military Region
has expanded over the last year and we always welcome new members to join us. You do not have to be intensive care nurse’s just nurses and HCSW who work or have an interest in the critical care environment. As the BACCN Military Region membership lead that is my recruiting spiel over. If you would like to know more about the BACCN contact Lynda.jordan377@ mod.uk or visit the website http:// www.baccn.org.uk/
