   201 General Hospital Nancy was born in 1913 in Heaton, the eldest of ten children, of Master Builder Alfred Sidney McQueen.
Nancy trained as a State Registered Nurse (SRN) at South Shields General Hospital, before commencing midwifery training. She joined the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS) in 1944, with a first posting to Shaftsbury Military Hospital. After six months, she was posted to Cairo, then to No 6 Hospital, Mombasa, then for six months at Madagascar and 1st East Africa Hospital at Nairobi [1946] (a 600 bedded hospital). Unfortunately, she developed malaria and was sent to Nanyuka, Northeast Africa to convalesce for six weeks. She then returned to the UK, first taking up post at the Sheriff Hill Hospital for Infectious Diseases, Gateshead. While there, one of the Nursing Sisters persuaded her to join the Territorial Army (TA) [c 1959]
Nancy has some happy memories of her time in the TA, particularly

   being winched from a helicopter and parachuting at a small airport near Newcastle. Meanwhile, Nancy worked for a short time at Sherburn House Hospital, near Durham, before taking up post at the RVI as Infection Control Sister, from where she retired in 1976. She was awarded the Associate Royal Red Cross (ARRC) and the Territorial Decoration (TD) in 1972 and was a founder member of the QARANC Association, Newcastle Branch.
For the last 6 years Nancy has lived in a Nursing Home near Shincliffe
County Durham.
She died in September 2012 aged
98 years.
Her funeral was held at St Johns
Church in Killingworth Village and was well attended by Members of the QARANC Association, SSAFA, and the Royal British Legion. The Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Mr. Nigel Sherlock was present. Most of her 14 nieces and nephews were present
Donations in lieu of flowers were made to SSAFA.
