LEWIS & CLARK SECTION
MEETING SUMMARY
Portland, Oregon
On 3 April, 2018 17 members of the Lewis & Clark Section enjoyed a
presentation by John L. Pariseau, lead quality assurance specialist for the
US Army Corps of Engineers. Pariseau discussed various welding techniques
and subsequent inspection protocols. Pariseau explained in detail the
different fluxes, gasses, and electrodes used during gas metal arc welding,
flux-cored arc welding, submerged arc welding, and gas tungsten arc
welding, as well as the peculiar metallurgical flaws that are prone to occur
with each welding technique. Of particular interest was the phenomenon of
delayed hydrogen cracking and the extraordinary efforts that must be
employed to reliably detect this type of defect. Pariseau outlined the
suggested NDT methods proven to be most effective at detection of the
various defect types. Test Equipment Distributors hosted gourmet pizza
for all attendees at Flying Pie Pizzeria.
Lewis & Clark Section Vice Chair David F. Harris (right) presented John L.
Pariseau with a small token of appreciation for his presentation at the
Section’s 3 April meeting.
