 SCHOOL VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Families and communities expect schools to be a safe place
for students. School officials, teachers, parents and students
all have an important role in promoting school safety. Adults can provide leadership by reassuring students that schools are generally very safe places for children and youth and reiterating what safety measures are already in place in their schools.
CREATE A SENSE OF SAFETY AND SECURITY _______
Children and youth can be adversely affected by school and community violence, war, and terrorism, particularly when there is extreme suffering and strife in so many places throughout the world. They may experience violence and loss directly, be exposed through extensive media and internet coverage, deal with the stress of parents who are deployed or are first responders, or be displaced by violence and become refugees.
Though children are naturally resilient, trauma, stress and anxiety can interfere with learning and their well- being. Families and educators must provide children with a sense of safety and security. By helping them to process their thoughts and feelings on violence, reinforcing a child’s strengths, and placing events
in the proper context children will get this sense of safety and security.
