Theme selection process:
Theme was selected over a series of meetings of the entire Solstice club beginning in August 2019. Ideas for theme were brainstormed, then categorized
into several groups of potential themes to reduce duplicate/overlapping themes. Idea groups were then evaluated on their ability to represent objective criteria in five areas: universality, multifacetedness, visual & emotional evocativeness, personification, and originality. From this evaluation, three potential final theme ideas were chosen by the whole group, with the final theme determined by the Literary avpread idea sketches. From these ideas, 11 spread templates for 22 interchangable page types were devel- oped in InDesign. Individual spreads in the final magazine were created by designating artwork/ literary for specific template pages roughed in by designers with design staff assistance. Spreads are then finalized/proofed by the Creative Director and Managing Editor.
Artwork Selection Process:
Submissions for artwork are open from Septem- ber through January, and artwork is submitted by students, teachers and through school art shows.
SPECIFICATIONS: ORGANIZATION:
Artwork is selected by design staff based upon four criteria: artistic merit, artwork category, editorial flexibility, and publication theme. Special consid- eration is given to Scholastic Art award winning work. Other than minor cropping to fit page/ bleed, no editing of art is done.
Literary Selection Process:
Submissions are accepted from September to Feb- ruary; all literature is student-created, and submitted for consideration by students. All literary submissions sent to Solstice are admitted and judged by the literary staff anonymously, guaranteeing that all writers are given an unbiased chance to be featured for publication. Literary works are selected on
a basis of thematic content, writing technique,
and originality. All selections are curated to ensure the most varied array of interesting, unique, and conceptually rich pieces. Published pieces are only edited by the literary staff for mechanics.
Distribution Process:
Magazine is distributed digitally to students who paid HCHS Activity Fee in May, followed by a limited print distribution later in September.
