 Boxford Mosaic
In 2017, as part of a 3 year project, the Berkshire Archaeology Research Group (BARG), in partnership with the Boxford History Project and Cotswold Archaeology, discovered and partly excavated 2 Roman villas in Boxford. The second one however, held a surprise in the form of a stunning mosaic floor filled with images from the Greek myth of Bellerophon and other mythical images.
Experts have described it as unique for Britain and the most important British mosaic find for at least the last 50 years.
Due to time restraints and the unexpectedness of the find only half was revealed in 2017. This summer the plan is to return and uncover the full mosaic floor. If you want to read more about the find just search ‘Boxford Mosaic’ and plenty of news stories can be found.
If you would like to support your local archaeology group (BARG) with a donation to help fund our projects then please visit the children’s archaeology event and Lindsey Bedford, who also teaches in our Nursery Department will tell you all you need to know!
