awaiting students. It happened once in our class, and that was the last time. He facilitated our academic success by employing effecting teachers. We enjoyed listening to History students as they discussed historical figures like Bismarck, Stalin and others. They, in turn, enjoyed – with some bewilderment – watching us solve Maths and Chemistry problems. We’d come together and thresh Shakespearean books and the Anthology, Poetry-Now and Then, quoting passages in competition, from time to time.
Today, the Colosa Alumni is a family of Educators and Education Specialists, CEO and Strategists of private companies – self owned or employed, Artists in various areas, Health professionals across the spectrum, members of Law Society, Accountants, Engineers, Librarians and Diplomats.
The conquering spirit instilled in all of us by the dedicated educators of Colosa High, propelled us to become the shrewd members we are today. For everything we all are, we feel it appropriate to give back to the institution that groomed us so diligently.
Our first reunion was in 2018. It was a big event that was blessed by the presence of the Schools’ ex- teachers. Local business fraternity was also represented by our own matchless Community builder – Mr Ngumbela – ASIMANGA SIYAQHUBA RHULUMENTE, who first donated to the school in the early 80’s, and continues to do to other schools as well. Prof. Barney Pityana, the ex-Vice Chancellor of UNISA delivered a very encouraging speech during our Gala Dinner. He encouraged us to do more than what we had done already. This, we do, under the Chairmanship of Dr Percy Mahlathi.
By the time the Alumni gathered for a reunion, we had already facilitated the following projects:
1. Teacher Development programmes. A quick diagnostic exercise was done to get to the root cause of such embarrassing failure rate.
2. A 2-week matric camp during the month of September 2017 had kicked in, and is to be done every September of each year.
3. Career day is an annual event, also started in 2017.
4. 200 Tablets and 10 desk tops had been raised through sponsorships in 2017 and handed over in 2018.
5. A whole lot of books & DVD’s – used and new- had also been collected in 2017 and others in 2018.
6. A new set of ablution facilities was erected around June 2018.
Winter school is set to start in June 2020, plans are afoot.
All these projects and improvements have made a great impact to the upgrade we saw in the school’s academic achievement of 2019. For example, the Matric pass rate was 36% in 2016 and last year it had jumped to 69%. Students and Educators alike are enthusiastic, positive, diligent and have taken a keen interest and responsibility towards their own future and the future of the school.
