Cal-OSHA
The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency dedicated to the safety and well-being of workers. Both Federal OSHA and State OSHA, working in tandem, set and enforce protective standards and regulations that employers must follow to assure safe working conditions for their employees. Cal-OSHA provides training and education and requires employers to provide such training to all employees to make certain that the employers seek continual improvement in their safety standards.
All states are required to follow federally mandated OSHA safety guidelines; however, 22 states have their own OSHA programs by which the state requirements must meet or may exceed the federal mandate, in which case the state standards would supersede (take precedent).
In dentistry, the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard and the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard are developed specifically for the profession. Cal-OSHA has established standards in both these areas for which we will discuss in this review chapter.
