OUSOOR IN THE MYSORE / HOSUR [III ORIENTAL SCENERY. 14] 4TH MAY 1792
The Daniells’ aquatint captures explicitly the dry country of the Bangalore plateau. The capture of the fort of Hosur was of great importance to Cornwallis, during his campaign against Tipu Sultan as it guarded the northern end of the pass through the Baramahal Hills, on the supply route used by the British from Carnatic to Bangalore.
The fort of Hosur in the Mysore country was built on a tolerably even ground though considerably elevated. The town is surrounded by an almost impenetrable hedge; and the outer parts of the fort are constructed in very much the European manner, and it was undergoing repairs and additions to reinforce it strength and position there, yet it was taken without much resistance by Major Gowdie in July 1791, during the third campaign of Earl Cornwallis.
