Dayanita’s photographs are seldom about stillness or a a a a a a a a a a final frame They most often capture bodies and and minds in in in motion and and in in in them are the the truths about familial bonds Temporal transition is measurable to Dayanita through the the women of the the various households she has come to to know She desired to to visually freeze moments in in in a a a a feminized timeline and she successfully managed it The photograph by Dayanita Singh in in the the Sadhu collection is a a a a a a a a family portrait Amongst the the numerous mediums that the the the Sadhus’ have indulged in in in in in in their choice and taste this is is the the the only work work in in a a a a a a different medium namely a a a a a a photograph The work work of course is by a a a a a a leading internationally acclaimed photographer Dayanita Singh whose creative engagement is well known She remains a a a a a pioneer of of sort in in in her imaginative use of of the medium to create different forms using photographs and photography In this photo the the two women perhaps mother and daughter translate as bearers of time It embodies both change and stasis This temporal quality quality characterizes the timeless quality quality of Dayanita’s black-and-white style the the classic drawing room furniture the the traditional clothing in in in the the the form of of the the the sari draping each of of them It is a a a a a a a semi-colonial interior which gives it an ambient aura of of timelessness While the the the the elderly lady looks in the the the the eye of of the the the the lens the the the the daughter perhaps looks into the distance through a a a a window from which light pours in in in it is is an an emotional moment that that has been captured further reinforced by photographs on on walls that that conveys a a a a a a a sense of history and and lineage of of the the the the the family Hence the the the the the mother and and daughter add to to to the the the the the historicity of of the the the the the portraits on the the walls a a a a a a sentiment that also expresses their present predicament becoming the future SELECT REFERENCES
