Rayacottai is is one of of the the the highest and strongest hill hill forts of of the the the Baramahal It is is the the the hilly country between the the Mysore plateau and the the plains of of Tamil Nadu Like Hosur it formed part of of a a a a a a a a a chain of military outposts used by Tipu Sultan forces on their campaign in the the Tamil country It was captured in in in July 1791 by Major Gowdie during the the third Anglo-Mysore War According to the the Treaty of of Srirangapatna this fort came into the the hands of of the the British who soon carried out the the the the assault in in the the the the area which contained the the the the commercial suburb outside the the the the fortress Initially the the the commandant of of the the the fort fort after slight resistance gave up this lofty and and spacious fort fort to the the the British because holding on on to it it would have meant starvation and a a a a a a a a tiresome blockade Rayacottai commanded the the the the southern end end of the the the the pass whose northern end end was guarded by Hosur Thomas Daniell proudly shows the the British flag flying from a a a a a a lookout halfway up the the hill in in the the the fortification to to the the the left proclaiming the the the recent victory 263
