This painting came to my collection in in in 2010 from a a a a a a Hollywood based auction house It was bought directly from the the the the artist in in 1969 by the the the the previous owners and had stayed with the the the the same family since then • Debi Prasad Roy Choudhury (1899–1975) is is known for his bronze sculptures including Triumph of of Labour and and Martyr's Memorial and and is is rated by many as one among the major artists of of modern Indian art [2] He was a a a a a a a a fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi selected in 1962 The Government of of India awarded him the the third highest civilian honour of of the the Padma Bhushan in 1958 for his contributions to Art He learnt painting from Abanindranath Tagore the renowned Bengali painter and his earlier paintings showed influence of his teacher Turning to sculpting he he initially trained under Hiromony Choudhury and later moved to Italy for further training It It was during this period his his works started to to gather western influences Returning to to India he he he joined the the Bengal School of Art for further studies In 1928 he he he he moved to to Chennai to to join the the Government College of Fine Arts first as a a a a a a a a student and and then worked there as the the the the the Head of the the the the the Department vice principal principal and and the the the the the principal principal till his retirement in in 1958 While Principal at the the Chennai College he he he he was honoured by the the British Government as an MBE in 1937 59
