Set in the original gold frame the reverse with locks of brown hair tied with split seed pearls and gold wire on opalescent glass.
It is believed that the sitter was Mary Hunter who married Thomas Pagan (born circa 1741-1818) who was buried in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland. Between them they had four children, Mary, Archibald, Thomas and Janet.
Alexander Gallaway from 1794 until his death was based in Scotland, firstly in Glasgow and then, in 1811-12, in Edinburgh. He also exhibited at the Society of Artists in Edinburgh in 1808.His sitters varied greatly - from the emerging Scottish middle classes to personalities such as the actor Richard Brinsley Sheridan, with examples of his work found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
