indistinctly signed on the reverse and dated 1793, set in the original fish skin case with inscription A Miniature/ of/ Captain/ N. Burslem/ when in the 11th Regt/ of Foot/ painted by Barry/ the celebrated Irish/ Miniature painter/ in or about the/ year 1793./ 50 guineas he/ received for / painting it.
This is a strong portrait in excellent condition
Nathaniel Burslem was appointed, in December 1789, Ensign in the 11th foot: Lieutentant, in August 1793: Captain in Smith's Corsican Regiment the 4th of April 1795 : Captain in the 14th Foot, by exchange, the 22d of November 1797: Major in the 14th Foot 7th of March 1805:
Brevet Lieut. Col. the 1st of March 1811: and Lieut. Col. in the 14th Foot the 13th of October 1814.
This officer, after serving at Gibraltar three years, was employed as a Marine Officer at Toulon, and was present in all the actions in that quarter, and at Corsica. He afterwards served at Elba and in Tuscany. In 1800 he went to Martinique, and there served two years under Lieut. Gen. Trigge. In
