Although Anne Foldson was forbidden to paint male sitters after her marriage to her husband Mr. Mee, this miniature along with several other known miniatures of Naval sitters indicates that Mrs. Mee did not always abide by her husbands wishes.
It has not been possible to identify the sitter but the comparatively large size of the miniature coupled with the presence of a ship in the background would suggest that the sitter was a wealthy Captain.
