upsurge over current numbers, and that these travelers will increase tour- ism spending by 22 percent, adding more than US $265 million to the economy. This growth will yield US $22 million in revenue to the national agency for tourism and US $10 million in taxes to the government, caus- ing a whopping 0.48 percent increase in GDP. This influx will naturally lead to job creation and increased support for local arts and crafts. Sup- portive industries like hospitality, retail, food service, and transportation will flourish as well.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR CULTURE—AND INVESTMENT
Fundación Museo Maya de América is a nonprofit institution chartered with the specific purpose of bringing MUMA to life. The foundation’s vision for the museum is both cultural and educational—to protect the Maya legacy and to provide a platform for ongoing research and learn- ing. In service of this objective, fMUMA is responsible for all communi- cations, development, design, and construction, as well as services and activities offered at the museum. Most importantly, fMUMA is tasked with creating an endowment to fund the project.
As a nonprofit association, fMUMA relies on self-generated revenue, pri- vate donations, and grants. In 2016, it will launch an international fund- raising campaign, with an initial goal of US $100 million, to build MUMA. One component of the funding drive seeks to engage private enterprise in museum planning and development through corporate sponsorships
for the building as well as for permanent and temporary exhibitions, new wings, and future renovations. Businesses will have the opportunity to re- main active in museum sponsorship via corporate memberships, which carry privileges for the various levels of support.
MUMA is destined to become a symbol of Guatemala—both its rich her- itage and its ongoing vitality. Guatemalans will be able to display their pride in being part of one of the founding civilizations of the world, a civilization that continues in traditions today. As a leading institution de- voted to cutting-edge museography, an unparalleled collection, and a distinctive architectural experience, the museum will be a destination for scholars, tourists, and locals alike. Fernando Paiz Andrade, president of fMUMA, is passionate about the challenge. “With an enormous sense of optimism and a vision for the future, we aim to create a museum that celebrates Maya culture and carefully explains it. We want the world to understand the sophistication and richness of this civilization in Guate- mala and beyond.”
MUMA is raising funds for the construction of the museum through its brick campaign, “A million friends for the museum.” For a dona- tion of US $100, contributors, both local and global, can place a brick with their name in the Plaza de los Amigos, which will span the perimeter of the museum.
