America primarily under the Movistar brand name, and offers internet content and services in Spanish and Portuguese markets under the brand name Terra and VIVO. Large corporate clients, especially those with global communications needs, may also deal directly with Telefónica. In addition, the Telefónica name identifies the firm’s foundation, Fundación Telefónica, which directs the company’s numerous philanthropic activities. In a similar vein, the company actively participates in the social life of the countries in which it does business by sponsoring numerous social, cultural, and sporting events. Operating in the Central American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama, Telefónica provides 11.4 million accesses, the overwhelming majority of which are in mobile telephony. It also furnishes internet and data connections, pay television, and fixed telephony accesses. Telefónica is so committed to upgrading network and infrastructure in the region to improve service and capture market share that it invested about €435 million in its Central American and Venezuelan operations in 2014, nearly a 65 percent increase over 2013 numbers.
During the first half of 2015, the company added 194,000 new accesses in Central America, although this was offset by the company’s decision to discontinue 1.8 million inactive prepay accesses. Smartphone usage with the company increased by more than 25 percent, an increase of 7 percentage points year on year; voice traffic similarly recorded healthy growth of about 10 percent during the first half. Revenues for Central American operations stood at €435 million by midyear, an increase of 3.2 percent year on year.
Calling all businesses ...
While it provides millions of access points to individual customers throughout Central America, Telefónica is positioning itself as the “digital telco” that is the go-to firm for business clients in need of reliable telecommunication solutions. It is ideally suited to serve a broad range of businesses and other organizations, including startups of all kinds; small, well-established businesses; expanding companies of all sizes; and large enterprises. Throughout Telefónica’s areas of operations, it has already encountered nearly every possible type of business arrangement and developed suitable telecommunication solutions. Telefónica offers the insights earned through this broad experience to help customers to enhance their efficiency and productivity, giving them a competitive edge. Always on the cutting edge of telecom technology, Telefónica stands ready to meet new challenges and provide bespoke solutions to customers’ new situations. There are many advantages to dealing with Telefónica, but three stand out:
Telefónica’s global capabilities and resources that are available for supporting global projects are equal or superior to anything else that might be found in the marketplace.
The company’s global presence gives it innumerable laboratories within which it has developed and learned best practices that can be replicated in other environments.
Telefónica’s own competitive edge comes not only from a broad and ever-evolving range of products and applications—solutions that address both fixed and mobile communication environments—but also from the its development of close-in working relationships and real partnerships.
With respect to the services it provides to its business clients, Telefónica is especially familiar with the many challenges faced by large companies. It works with such organizations by providing a single point of contact, which maximizes the ability to integrate multiple solutions across broad organizational or geographical distances. In addition, the company has access to a broad range of technological and intellectual resources it can put to work creating solutions to even the most vexing problems. Small businesses, with their sometimes- unique configurations and operations, frequently present challenging circumstances. Telefónica’s approach is to work with clients to develop
the solutions that most simply address their needs, but to develop them with scalable access so that those solutions will continue to serve them through their growth.
Whatever their size, Telefónica’s customers can count on a dynamic, secure relationship that adapts to their changing needs and contributes to a competitive advantage.
“In Telefonica we chose to Listen, Grow, Accelerate, Surprise, Transform and Be Brave to give a decisive move towards global leadership in this fast-paced digital revolution we are living. In other words, we CHOOSE EVERYTHING to become an ‘OnLife Telco’” —Osman Rodriguez, CEO of Telefónica Central America
