Page 23 - DARE TO ASK
P. 23
England: Kevin—Not Just the Leftovers. Before I knew it, I was standing in a room full of sight-impaired men and women physically embracing God’s truth for the rst time. Fingers slowly traced across the braille pages, some mouths silently forming the words as they read. I looked around the room and a thought occurred to me: This is the place where people receive vision.
As I spoke to these men and women, the rst thing I saw was not their blindness, but that they are rst and foremost God’s children. I can't help but ask why the sight-impaired are too often cast into the margins of life. Why are the physically impaired often given the leftovers instead of being invited to the table?
When God prompted me to create an accessible version of Christian to the Core* for the sight-impaired, I had no hesitation. Surely, the God who healed blindness could enable us to reach the blind with practical discipleship material. I often saw these believers con ned to the second-hand knowledge of foundational discipleship truths, like listening to a lecture, but lacking the opportunities and resources for themselves.
Instead of merely listening to a presentation, these men and women would now be able to read for themselves, fully engage, and participate in the material. Inviting the visually impaired to the table is about much more than accessibility, it is about empowerment. As a friend of mine once said, “The Church should be the example of how we include every part of the Body of Christ.”
Our vision is to see the teaching stretch beyond the material, multiplying as participants train others. These sight-impaired men and women are living into their callings as children of God with the con dence from holding God’s Truth in their hands. They are now fully engaged in the disciple-making process in a new and exciting way.
Kevin worked with Torch Trust to publish braille and large-print versions of Christian to the Core for ministry to the sight-impaired. *Christian to the Core is ILI’s discipleship resource based on the Eight Core Values.
