A very successful SASTA Annual Conference was held at Adelaide High School on 16 & 17 April 2018 under the direction of Conference Convenor, Dr Jane Wright.
SASTA’s President, Vanessa Fay, opened the proceedings.
SASTA Medal
The SASTA medal recognises a member that has made a signi cant contribution to science education or teaching or both. The 2018 SASTA Medal was awarded to Dr Kathy Paige.

Kathy was an easy choice for this year’s medal due to her extensive contribution to SASTA and science education over a period of 25 years.
Kathy has a passion for science education and has brought her expertise into both the primary classroom and tertiary setting. She has worked tirelessly to teach and develop innovative curricula, transform pedagogies and support teachers to build their skills and self-ef cacy as science educators. She is also recognised for her work in inspiring future science educators for the betterment of science education in South Australia.
Kathy has also made signi cant contributions to the work of SASTA as a committee member, workshop presenter, conference convenor and
Oliphant Awards judge. She has published numerous research, journal articles and
book chapters about science education and continues to provide her time and expertise to stakeholders at a state and national level.
The breadth and depth of Dr Kathy Paige’s active service to SASTA and science education for many years, makes her a worthy recipient of the 34th SASTA Medal.
Helen Castle Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Helen Castle, a dedicated and enthusiastic science teacher who tragically died during the Eyre Peninsula bush res
in 2005. The scholarship is designed to assist country science teachers attend the SASTA conference and gain professional development to assist themselves and other country teachers to maintain a high standard of science teaching within country areas. The 2018 recipient was Selena Kleinrahm from Memorial Oval Primary School in Whyalla.

Selena is a very experienced classroom practitioner who has taught at a variety of sites in a variety of roles across the State, both metropolitan and regional. She has been at her current site, Memorial Oval Primary School, for fourteen years.
