SA space careers: a universe of options
The South Australian Space Industries Centre (www.sasic.sa.gov.au) opened last year. In this article, the Centre gives an overview of the current status of Space industries in SA; the career and education options now available to SA students here in their home State; a sample of the many di erent space-related education programs that SA schools are now participating in; and a call for SA schools to be involved.
With advancements in space technologies and the emergence of more affordable satellite technology, the global space economy,
worth an estimated $400 billion annually,
is experiencing unprecedented growth. In Australia, the sector is worth $3-4 billion and employs an estimated 11,500 people.
Our growing space industry
South Australia is a hub of space activity, and is a leader in the growth and development
of the booming industry. We are home to an entrepreneurial and research-driven space ecosystem, consisting of over 60 space- related organisations. Between 2000 and 2017 the number of space companies more than tripled from nine to 34, including six
new companies which established in the
last 18 months. This is in addition to 30 other space-related organisations in SA including universities and research centres. A growing number of innovative start-ups, such as Fleet Space Technologies1, Myriota2 and Inovor
Technologies3, has emerged in the past two years.
We are also home to Nova Systems, a
locally headquartered company with a rapidly expanding global footprint. Many of these companies are developing ground-breaking new space technologies and are competing in the global space market.
South Australia’s space economy encompasses upstream engineering
and science activities on spacecraft, along with downstream processing and commercialisation of the data and images obtained.
